Digital Griot: A Conversation with Interdisciplina Digital Griot: A Conversation with Interdisciplinary Artist Rashaad Newsome and PBS’s Independent Lens. In the interview, Newsome speaks about Assembly, the creation of Being the Digital Griot, and the possibilities of art, technology, performance, and Black queer thought as tools for collective transformation. Being began as a counter-hegemonic AI rooted in the writings and teachings of Black, feminist, queer, and decolonial thinkers. In Assembly, they become a guide, performer, poet, educator, and healer — helping us imagine what technology can become when it is shaped by care, liberation, and community. We are thrilled to share that Assembly, the featur We are thrilled to share that Assembly, the feature documentary co-directed by Rashaad Newsome and Johnny Symons, is now streaming on PBS’s Independent Lens and on the PBS Documentaries YouTube Channel from June 22 through September 21. This film holds so much: performance, protest, technology, care, Black feminist thought, ballroom, AI, and the collective labor of imagining more liberated ways of being together. Assembly began as a live work at Park Avenue Armory and became a film through the brilliance, vulnerability, and vision of an extraordinary community of artists, thinkers, dancers, and collaborators.
